teach elementary math

Do you need a degree in Math to teach Math for Middle School in CA?
I am going to transfer to a University from a community college in the Fall. I feel that I am too far along with my Liberal Arts degree to change my degree to something else. I am already planning to be a teacher, and originally was going be an elementary teacher, but with the way economy is here in California, and the fact that it is really hard to find a teaching job, I am thinking it may be smarter to become a Math teacher. From what I have heard, you can just take a single subject credential to teach Math, and not actually major in Math, but I really don’t know how true that is. Can anyone provide me with the correct information?
You can do this – however – You will still be required to pass the three cset tests – without a solid math background I dont see how you will pass them.
Here are the domains you will be tested on: only someone with a strong grounding in math will pass it – liberal arts wont cut it – unless you happen to be a wiz on the side.
