How to Teach a Child a Language?

My nieces have expressed interest in learning Tagalog. We are all Filipino, but most of the kids do not speak it. How do I go about teaching them? One is 8 and the other is 13 so I’m not sure I should be teaching them grammar structures and whatnot. They have been exposed to Tagalog all their lives so they can somewhat understand it, but all the adults switch between Tagalog and English and all of their cousins, siblings, and peers at school speak English so that is the language they learned. Since they knows some Tagalog I have been speaking to them in nothing but Tagalog and they seem to understand the gist. However, even though I tell her she must try to reply back in Tagalog she is too shy.

since they are both eager to learn tagalog, it’s better to let them learn/study together..maybe this way, they’d be less shy to converse to each other in tagalog since they’re of the same level..if you’re talking to them and they refuse to reply, try answering your own question so they can retain it because maybe they aren’t really shy but they don’t know exactly what/how to respond..it’s also good that they’ve been exposed to the language because hearing a particular language all the time is a good way to get used to that language so another tip is to let them listen to more tagalog songs. give them the lyrics and the english translation so they can study them on their own. hopefully when you give them new songs along the way, they’d be able to understand based on the previous songs they learned.. im not really a fan of learning from the traditional way (teacher-pupil) so by letting them learn through music, they can get used to hearing the language (right intonation, pronunciation) and they can study the sentence construction through the lyrics..just choose the songs to give them). also, let them watch tagalog movies and shows to make them even more familiar with the language and the culture as well.
