education graduate schools

Are there programs to help psychology/education students pay for graduate school?
I plan to become a guidance counselor, but I intend to do a graduate psychology program (either counseling or educational psychology). Are there any programs that will help pay for my schooling like there are for students in the nursing and finance fields? Or are there any jobs I can get straight out of college that will give incentives or help pay for my graduate-level work? I know of volunteer programs and others like Teach for America that offer loan forgiveness and will cover a certain amount of your loan costs, but are there ones specifically for people in the education field? All help will be greatly appreciated.
When you apply to your choice of Graduate Schools, inquire as to whether or not the institution offers Graduate Assistantships. Many schools offer these programs which (in most cases) partially or completely cover the cost of education at the institution in exchange for you working (usually about 20 hours each week) at the institution. For example, if you apply to University A, you might work for a department at University A part time. in exchange University A would pay you a stipend and free tuition. (Other perks are also offered sometimes or can be negotiated such as free housing on campus or a meal plan.) If you were an RA in undergrad you may work for the Residence Life office. If you were an athlete perhaps you would work for Athletics. Involved in Greek Life? Perhaps you would work in the Greek Affairs office. Many options are available.
In some cases, Assistantships work a little differently. You may be getting an education at University A, but University A has an agreement with University B that allows you to work for them. You would go to school at University A, work at University B, and B would pay A all or part of your tuition.
Tip: If you are getting your degree in Education or Psychology, you would have a good chance at being a Graduate Assistant either serving as a Teaching Assistant (mostly only at larger or state schools). You would also have experience that would suit you for an Assistantship in a Student Services Department (Counseling Office, Residence Life, Student Life, etc.)
Good luck.

Graduate Theological Education and the Human Experience of Disability
$13.98 Create pathways for people with disabilities in theological education and congregational practice! Graduate Theological Education and the Human Experience of Disability examines graduate schools of theology and their limited familiarity with the study of disability—and the presence of people with disabilities in particular—on their campuses. Dubbed a "missing note" by one theologian, this text offers critical research and illuminates new pathways for theologia and practice in the community of faith. Reviews of previous literature, theology, and practices illuminate how people with disabilities have historically been marginalized by the religious community. Theologians, people with disabilities and researchers offer suggestions for incorporating disability studies into theological education and religious life. This text contains firsthand testimony from people with disabilities who are the necessary sources of wisdom for overcoming barriers. By infusing education into existing theological curriculum, seminaries may better prepare their students for leadership and ministry in their congregations. People with disabilities number 18% of the population, yet represent only 5-7% of congregational membership. This book explores aspects of theology and disability such as: the challenges faced by theological schools that desire to improve both theological curriculum and facilities a review of literature that connects theology and disability—from sources such as scripture, history, faith traditions, and social theory the various ideologies that shape the way the human body is understood—redefining "normal" in theological education an overview of critical boundaries that mark the limits and possibilities for theological inquiry about the human experience of disability creative concepts that religious communities may use to better include people with disabilities and their families how the religious community may benefit from the gifts, talents, and leadership of people with disabilities Graduate Theological Education and the Human Experience of Disability contains a reprint of Dr. Harold Wilke's landmark 1978 article from Theological Education (published by the Association of Theological Schools). Dr. Wilke, born without arms, was the theologian, minister and scholar who first articulated the need to address the human experience of disability in both theological education and congregational life. With extensive biographies and inclusive liturgies, this innovative text is a valuable resource for seminary professors and leaders, clergy, and disability advocates. |
