For NON-NATIVE English speakers: How do you feel about learning English as a foreign language?
I’ve learned reading and writing in English as soon as I started learning my native language – Filipino – formally. That is, I started learning it since kindergarten, at the age of five.
It’s an advantage being acquainted with the language; it helped me learn more about the world unlike what translated school textbooks taught me. But it’s also a disadvantage for it hinders me from expressing and advancing in my own native tongue. School often required us to speak, read and write in English, and now, my work requires me to do just the same. I’m quite fluent in both written and spoken English, but I still find a dilemma with using the language…
Those who use Filipino as a language in my country are often looked down by fellow Filipinos. But I want to express myself in my native tongue as much as I do in English. Help! Where should I stand?
hey, always mother tongue is like the mother herself. You should be on the side of philipino. Imagine that your mother is not very good looking. (now there, good looking itself is relative!!), if people in public criticise the looks of your mother, how would you take it. Just that. If people criticize philipino either in private or public, just do what you would have done to your mother’s criticizers. But ofcourse that fight back, you should do in English. That is the beauty of it.
